Sounds about like me. I started riding in the 3rd grade and had to cross a multilane highway. Now I am sure my parents would get arrested and charged with child endangerment

My two went to a neighborhood school for a while (until the friggin colored marble counters got into the act

) I rode them to school, for a while on a trail a bike, and then on their own individual bikes.
