I find a suspension fork makes a big difference on such a path. The park where I usually ride has two paths, one paved and one mostly packed dirt and gravel. Riding a suspension fork bike, I'd alternate between the two paths for the variety. When I ride a bike with a rigid fork, the dirt and gravel path is so unpleasant that I just stick to the paved path. I ride for fun, and the dirt/gravel path isn't fun without the suspension.
