I also had the surgery and it's worked out great for me, although I know it's not for everyone.
Before that I wore RGP (rigid gas-permeable) contacts for many years, they worked well for me although they have their limitations. I had to briefly switch to soft contacts for a little while before the surgery to prep for it and I have to say that I really hated them, I'd never choose soft contacts again. I ended up preferring glasses to soft contacts.
