Flipping the seatpost - a question
Background - in this part of the world, fancy fits dont happen. You straddle the bike, the guy goes "yeah, looks about ok" and there you are. When I bought my road bike (a Trek 1.2) a few months ago, I did try various seating positions and seemed most comfy in the 60cm frame, so that is what I ended up with.
For my first month or so of riding, it was quite comfortable as well. However, as my speed and riding distances increase (and since I went clipless on the road bike as well), I am starting to develop my own preferences vis a vis riding position and am trying to adjust the fit in order to compensate.
As of right now, I have realized that I am a fair bit behind the KOP position and would like to go KOP-neutral. I have no more wiggle room in the seat rails so I was wondering what would happen if I flip the seatpost (it is slightly offset) - this would solve my positioning problem and also reduce the overall reach of the bike (which is also something that I want to do now). Other than looking strange and getting me more Fred points, are there any downsides to this?
And please - no "buy a smaller bike"! I know that is the correct answer - and yes, that is in the cards. But I will not be buying it for a few months yet (2 new mountain bikes in the last 2 months - a third bike and my wife will kill me; plus, I want to meet some personal riding targets before upgrading to a nice road bike). I also want to understand my own fit requirements perfectly before going in for the new bike (which is why I had opted for the entry level bike). So for now, I need to HTFU and make do with this bike.
TIA,
V.
