I do agree that a commuting or XC tire would feel different as well as touring types built with thicker heavier casings and treads. To say that this tire or that is more supple and therefore much more comfortable without accounting for actual size and pressure is hype along the lines of laterally stiff yet vertically compliant frames.
I have to side with Danno on this. I have no doubt you know tires and racing bikes mmm. I believe we are talking orders of magnitude here. The biggest contributor to carcass stiffness which not only affects rolling resistance but ride quality...is related is TPI. If you take an inexpensive and very stiff low TPI tire which is also bombproof for punction resistance like the Vittoria Pro Tech at 60 TPI...not the Pro II but Tech...the ride quality difference with comparing same size tire width and pressure compared to the 120 TPI Pro II...is considerable.
