Does the Novara have an aluminum frame? They have a less-forgiving ride than a steel frame. This is why I recommend as follows to people on their first aluminum frame:

Take it out to a deserted parking-lot or similar.

Starting slowly, learn how the bike responds. The person should practice making turns and riding in circles. As you get used to how she handles - go a bit faster. As you get used to it, take one hand off the bars to make a turn signal and/or grab a water-bottle. It's really like learning to ride your first steel frame bicycle. And you didn't learn that in an hour. Be patient - confidence will increase. As will competence.
