I know that many riders new to drop bars like them as a crutch to ease the transition from flat bars, but I advise people not to get them as they will only delay them getting used to using the main brake levers.
I think it is easy to think that it is hard to move your hands from the tops to the hoods or drops quickly for an emergency stop, but it takes no time at all when you do it all the time. In the end it is safer to learn to do things the right way rather than indulging your fears.
