I was into some thinking this morning, and it would appear that this thread flies in the face of Godwin's Law. For those unfamiliar:
The longer an Internet discussion becomes, the more likely it is to disintigrate into a flame involving comparison with Nazis or Hitler. As the thread ages, the probability approaches 1.
There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs, the thread is considered over, and whomever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress.
Godwin's Law guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length. There is also a widely held codocil that any intentional triggering of Godwin's Law (in order to invoke its thread ending effects) will generally be unsuccessful.
I contend that Godwin's Law is flawed as it does not deal with threads that have no known topic, purpose, or for that matter interest, and fails to accomodate social groups (eg. aussies) who see flames for what they are and dutifully ignore them for the most part, regardless of whether that occurs through diligence or apathy
