It's not all roses having a metal bashguard; It may be stronger, but it's lighter. Oh and it costs less so choose your poison.
The poly carbonite is designed to crack like that instead of bending, thus bending the spider on the cranks. I'd sooner spend $60 to replace the cracked bash ring than to cough up $200 for a new crankset.
I've cracked one E13 bash guard 4 years ago and they took care of me, had a new one in my mail box a couple of days later and it's currently on the dmr. It's taken tons of hits to it and is still intact, will likely need to replace it soon.
