A lot of the so called car "mechanics" or "technicians" (especially the ones working at dealerships) these days can only tune or diagnose faults using a computer. A customer brings a car in complaining it's misfiring or running rough the kid will hook up a computer to it and if no fault codes are brought up then they just hand the car back to the customer and send them on their way with the problem still there. Old school mechanics through their years of experience and proper trade learning can diagnose stuff like burn valves just by the sounds and symptoms.
I dare say that's where bicycle repairs and maintenance is heading though cable operated gears and brakes will still be around for a while yet. I wonder how long before the department store bikes get a cheap Asian copy version of Di2?! I'm thinking 10 years, could be sooner. A lot of the cheap department store MTBs come with disc brakes so it's not totally out of the question for the racing type bikes to get some electronic gear selection gizmo sometime in the future.
