The system seems to work almost the same from a mechanic's perspective: install shifter, wire the derailers (instead of cables), adjust until it works right. BFD. Like bdcheung said above, the derailer still has limit screws.

As for all the retro-griping about cars, yeah - cars used to be easier for home mechanic to work on. But so what? Modern cars (generally) work much better, last FAR longer and are considerably more reliable in the first place. They're also safer, burn less gas and burn it more cleanly, the list goes on.

I like a lot of old things, but for the most part, new stuff works a lot better. The continual retrogrouchery is really annoying, it can basically be translated to "This makes me feel OLD, and I don't like that!" Sheesh.
Don't disagree here. Just pointing out that while things often CAN be fixed, most mechanics either don't have the electrical engineering skills/knowledge, or (as you pointed out) it's totally NOT cost effective to spend hours repairing something that could simply be unplugged and replaced for much less $$ and time.
