The debate on the effectiveness of helmets is only a side bar to the real reason for the thread, that there are those that point a finger at cyclists without a helmet and tell them they are wrong for not wearing one.
...and therefore put together mandatory helmet laws to ensure that their "right" position is reinforced. You cannot separate one from the other.
As an aside, I noted a couple with their daughter coming down the bike path today on a bike ride. The daughter had a helmet on, while the parents did not. I simply said that it was a great day for a bike ride, and waved as I went by on my recumbent.
