In big cities I prefer to camp in ravines off golf course, or in nature or undeveloped areas, river valleys, etc... I don't think most large parks in big cities are secure. For the most part dog and goose latrines around here. I generally try to get from one side of big cities to the other in one shot so I don't actually stop in them. I Know most cities that I have toured through so I don't hang about, but it would be cool to do otherwise I am sure. I have camped in the cities I have lived in, particularly in winter. Cause nobody is using those areas, or used to.
I don't think you can generalize as to how one will be officially received since it varies enormously. In Canada, there is often some official tolerance of the homeless, but a guy buzzing around on a bike in our way of travel is hardly homeless.
