I'd even say that genetics more often than not has little do with with weight -- so much so that it's more often an excuse of the misinformed or lazy. One might have a slower metabolism from your genetic makeup and that just means that person is at a slight disadvantage than those with normal or higher metabolisms, but that does not cause obesity in itself . More likely, the effect of "heredity" is simply poor eating habits passed from parents to children.
If you avoid processed foods (keep an eye on the list of ingredients) and stay moderately active, 99% of the time you wont be overweight.
