My 1500 has a triple crank. You'll find some pretty obnoxious comments on this site about using a triple, but I did my first 50 mile ride in Bucks County PA this year, and was glad to have it. Maybe using a triple makes me a wuss, but I recall passing more than a few fancy boys riding fancy bikes with doubles on the hills.

PS - make sure the LBS guys spend time fitting you properly. That's what you're paying extra for (compared to ordering online). Mine didn't and I spent all summer tweaking the fit. I go to different store now.
