I'm not surprised by this REI mech not knowing anything about Campy. A very good LBS near me, one I trust wholeheartedly with my Shimano equipped commuter, does not have any Campy tools in their repair shop (or very few). 99% of their customers are using Shimano. Almost all new bikes sold in the US are Shimano - it's the standard.
The REI guy obviously has never worked on anything else. It would be good, in order to be a well educated mech, for him to learn about it. However, it's completely unnecessary for him to know about it if he's going to continue to be a mech @ REI. I bet you were the first customer he's had that asked about anything Campagnolo from him.
If I need repairs done to my all Campy equipped road bike I take it to a LBS that specializes in high-end road race bikes.
I suggest you find one in your area - they'll appreciate an older bike with Campy.
