Here's my dilemma:
I'll be traveling in Austria at the end of August and have about 10 days on my own. I figured I would take the opportunity to go along the Danube and explore on my bike. Now the question is, if I only going to be cycling about 10 days, and I don't have a particularly nice touring bike at the moment, should I rent a bike once I get to Vienna, or should I bring my own?
As far as I can tell,
to outfit my current bike + air plane charges + train tickets for my bike = ~400USD
to rent a bike in Vienna + ask them to pick it up from Linz when I must stop = ~350USD
(The rental prices are a quote from Pedal Power in Vienna,
www.pedalpower.at)
... so the cost is about equivalent.
The pros of bringing is that the investment in my bike comes back home with me, and I will have my bike for the whole trip, even when I'm not touring per se. However, I will have to deal with loading it on multiple legs of trains (especially since airline bike fees limits where I can fly).
The pros of not bringing is of course, short of smashing the rental bike into a hard object, I probably don't have to worry about it very much. Also, I won't have to worry about getting my bike out of the airport.
Thus, I guess the questions are 1) are there other options, and 2) what factors other than cost have affected people's experience of bringing/renting bikes?
One (perhaps really superficial) thing that makes me disinclined to rent a bike is the fact that every inch of a rental bike is plastered with its company's (badly-designed) logo, and I very much dislike being made into a involuntarily walking advertisement...
Thanks in advance!
