Tyler Hamilton broke his collarbone during the first stage of the TDF back in 2003, secured a stage win later and placed 4th overall. Seems to me he may also have a very respectable result riding the Giro with a broken collarbone.
I think riding with broken bones is effin' nuts. If you wipe out, you could really hurt yourself. I'd talk to the doc and see what they advise.
