There is no way the insurance could possibly keep your bike unless they are offering a full replacement (and even then you'd have to explicitly agree to that).

I'd go get a quote from the bike shop before letting them look at it, though.

Don't have any work done, but get an official quote. Just ask them how much it would be to completely repair your bike, and ask them to put it in writing.

If you feel like you can get your bike completely repaired and everything squared medically by just taking money from the guy out of pocket, then do that. It's the friendly thing to do, and you'd be a jerk not to.

Don't compromise with the guy, though. The second the guy starts *****ing about paying $300 for a new wheelset and $200 for x-rays... book it with the insurance company.
