Simply put ... they are not they have VERY poor durability. I've been through quite a few Mallet axles. My Acids fell apart after 6 months. The seals were completely deficient. And the rebuild kits do not include ALL the seals for the pedal. When I sent my Acids in for repair with a broken axel, they tried to milk me for $35. I told them to fix the axel and send it back to me. I can grease my own pedals.
The notion that you should have to regrease pedals every 3 or so months is ridiculous.
Recently, I had a Mallet shear off on a pedal strike. This resulted in a nasty shoulder injury. I already had a new generation mallet in the shop due to axel failure. I've come to the conclusion that they are completely unreliable for big guys (250# +). I'm also really put off by their attitude on super-regular maintenance. I've ordered Time Zs to replace them.
To Crank Brothers credit, they do have good customer service. They'll fix them. Heck they even sent me a spare set of Egg Cs to carry in my pack. But I'm just completely sick of them failing so often and putting me in danger. I'm lucky I didn't break my clavicle. Hurts like hell though. Never would have happened if the pedal had not failed.
BTW, I also ordered their Split QR skewers and was VERY disappointed in their functionality. They were much harder to clamp then generic XT skewers. They EB skewers would not hold a track end mounted wheel in place against rear disc braking, even with MAXIMUM hand pain level amounts of force. Plain XT skewers handled the task easily.
In general Egg Brothers stuff looks good and has clever design. But doesn't really seem to hold up well or have fundamental design flaws that ruin the product. Or, their manufacturing standards are just low with crappy quality metallurgy. Their wheels look VERY cool and have a great concept. But I really wonder about what small details they've neglected on their other products.
