I can't answer your question of comfort road vs. upsizing traditional frame, and I'm a newbie so this comment is worth what you're paying for it...However, I thought I would mention that I have a new Cannondale SR800 and I love it. The handlebars give me options that make longer rides easier on my hands, arms and neck, and I happen to like the seat suspension. I did replace the stock seat with a female-friendly version.

The sport road models aren't hybrids. They're closer to road bikes with the exception of the handlebars and suspension. For someone like me, it has been a great choice. I don't race. I'm riding for fun, exercise, and I'm building toward longer and longer rides.

Hope this might be helpful. Have fun, whatever you decide!
