Rear Der Hanger Question.

Just curious - do rear derailleur hangers see much stress? I'm just curious from the standpoint of... say you're in gear 1 (the biggest cog). The chain is traveling through two jockey wheels within the derailleur system itself. But when the chain is on cog 1, it's the farthest away from the hanger itself where it is mounted. I assume if anything, being in cog 1 would be the most stressful for a derailleur hanger. But in general, I'm just wondering, how much stress does a derailleur hanger see from typical riding/shifting/whatever?

Also - is it possible for them to bend on their own without dropping the bike on its side or being involved in a wreck?
