My brother crashed my MTB (with standard cantilevers) and broke one of the brake levers so for a while I used some old V-brake levers. There was a definite loss of braking power. I shortened the transverse cables as much as possible and got some back. But I still didn't like it and ended up getting a nice pair of Ritchey canti brake levers.
