The 105 front derailleur is made for a 45mm chainline. Most mountain bike cranks set up at about a 50mm chainline. You may have trouble getting the 105 to swing out far enough to shift into the big ring. I've never tried it, so I don't know for sure.

The 105 front derailleur is pretty tolerant of different chain ring sizes, especially if you're friction shifting it. I'm using it on my touring bike with Specialites TA Zephyr cranks and 48-36-22 rings with a 45mm chainline. It shifts well with my friction bar-end shifter. Of course, it's a touring bike, not a racing bike. Shifting well means relative to its intended purpose. I've never tried to index shift it.
