When I gutted the lath and plaster in both upstairs bedrooms there wasn't a single stud cavity that didn't have whiskey and beer bottles and cigar butts. Beneath the trim for one of the closet shelves someone had written 'June 17, 1913' in the fresh plaster several times; it was done with a carpenter's pencil in the lovliest Palmer Method script.
