Freddy Maertens was the last person to win 6 stages in the Tour, 28 years ago in 1981. What Cavendish is doing as a sprinter might be even more impressive than Contador's domination, Lance's performance as a 37 year old or anything else people have been talking about.

lets say cavendish wins his sixth stage and contador wins the tour.
no doubt a great feat for cavendish and i think he's shown that he doesn't win just because of a superior leadout. whether you like to guy or hate him he is the fastest.
now let's look at contador. if he wins in paris it'll be his fourth GT win, and he's 26. who was the last guy to do that?
