I did notice Coleman Lake in Taladaga National Forest. If I went this way I would head south just east of Piedmont.

If memory serves me, to get to Coleman Lake you will have to do some mountain biking. It's a really nice area but you'll need fat tires since the surface is dirt/gravel. It's also very hilly (real mountains) if you go to Coleman Lake from Piedmont.

I think you can camp anywhere in the Talladega National Forest (free) but you only have facilities in the designated camping areas. Here's a number for the forest ranger: 256-463-2272.
