There are 3 other levels of shifter/components in the Shimano line. $250 for Ultegra is in the ball park for that level. But Sora or Tiagra would be more in keeping, price-wise, with the RSX you have. Changing shifters really isn't that difficult if you want to save money. Do a google for Sora shifters and you'll find single shifters for from $50 to $70. These guys even have a 7 speed rear for around $50.
