I use the bus or train, plus my folding bike, to visit my family, who live variously 400-600 miles away from me. It usually works out cheaper than the cost of the petrol when I used to drive - only once when I booked the night before did it cost more - never mind all the other costs. It does take longer - but I can't read a book, or sleep, if I drive myself.

In total, I have had 3 visits from my family since I moved away from them 6 years ago - but I visit them around 3 times a year. They say it's too far away! In the case of my parents, who are getting on a bit, and both my sisters, who have small babies, fair enough, but my brother doesn't really have an excuse.
