Despite being "entry-level" they're still good cr-mo frames, the components are a little on the cheap side on the 100 level bikes IMO. I took a One-Ten and put shimano 600 shifters and derailleurs, some Mafac brakes and a new crankset on it and its a great commuter now. I rode it to work this morning.
That isn't completely accurate. My 1984 310 is a 12 speed but Miyata didn't change to the 312 until 1987. They also made a 100, Triton, Nimbus, and Victor that were below the 112. They were in the "Sports" catagory.

Is this the bike?: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_whtVpXkKwl...0-h/img137.jpg
