I do a lot of automotive work as well as my bikes, and I have found that ChemDip works very well at cleaning chains. It is used for cleaning carburetors, (not the spray stuff). When it gets a bit nasty for cleaning carbs, I keep it around and use it for degreasing parts. Works great.
