New Bike - Update 8/1/09

So I figured it is time for me to get a real road bike. I have a Cannondale Capo but want something with gears. I am going Saturday to get fitted, test out some bikes, but so far I really like the Trek lineup. My limit for myself was around $1,500 for just the bike, although if I could get something good for less money that is the better option as money is sort of tight. I will also need clipless pedals and shoes. I was set on a 2.3 as long as it felt good so to get an idea of prices I called the closest Trek dealer, asked how much they are running, and then my lower draw dropped! $2,100 they said. MSRP is $1,810. I thought they are smoking something so I said thank you and hung up.

Called another dealer and asked the same thing and while he didn't have the 2.3 he does have the 2.1. He quoted me $1,200 for a size 56 (that is what my Capo is, although I understand it can differ from brand to brand) which I find OK considering that is a little below MSRP. Told me to stop by and I can get fitted, test out some bikes, etc. Sound nice enough.

I know what shop Ill be going to on Saturday.

What do you think of the 2.1? I would prefer the 105 components, but as an utter newb is it going to be a huge difference running the Tiagra in front and the 105 in rear on the 2.1 compared to 105 all around on the 2.3? They also sell Cannondale and Gary Fisher as well as Cervelo so I hopefully will have a few different bikes to compare.

Advice?
