I don't wear my vest much anymore, and when I do, it is mostly to keep warm, rather than for safety. Most of my measures are to be better seen in dim-to-dark conditions. To be more visible, I use:
- Yellow ANSI reflective tape all over the back of my helmet.
- A small, flashing, red, single LED light permanently attached to the back of my helmet (uses watch battery - very light).
- A Planet Bike Superflash tail light on my trunk bag, set on blink.
- My trunk bag has reflective strips on the sides and back, and I have a pair of reflective ankle bracelets dangling off the back as well (swinging motion gets people's attention).
- Yellow, 1.25 inch wide, ANSI reflective ankle bracelets. The reflectivity combined with the motion of pedaling really catches people's attention. Much more noticeable than the vest, for some reason.
- White ANSI reflective tape on the outsides and front of my biking shoes (catches the headlights from the front and sides, and again, the movement really catches their eye).
- A couple of 9-LED bulb flashlights (300+ lumens each). They make much brighter ones now, but this still works for me.
- One is attached to the handlebars, and points at the eye-level of oncoming traffic.
- The other one is attached to the left-side of my helmet. I can point this one at the road, in the faces of drivers coming up from side-roads and driveways to make sure that they see me, etc.
