I don't wear my vest much anymore, and when I do, it is mostly to keep warm, rather than for safety. Most of my measures are to be better seen in dim-to-dark conditions. To be more visible, I use:
  1. Yellow ANSI reflective tape all over the back of my helmet.
  2. A small, flashing, red, single LED light permanently attached to the back of my helmet (uses watch battery - very light).
  3. A Planet Bike Superflash tail light on my trunk bag, set on blink.
  4. My trunk bag has reflective strips on the sides and back, and I have a pair of reflective ankle bracelets dangling off the back as well (swinging motion gets people's attention).
  5. Yellow, 1.25 inch wide, ANSI reflective ankle bracelets. The reflectivity combined with the motion of pedaling really catches people's attention. Much more noticeable than the vest, for some reason.
  6. White ANSI reflective tape on the outsides and front of my biking shoes (catches the headlights from the front and sides, and again, the movement really catches their eye).
  7. A couple of 9-LED bulb flashlights (300+ lumens each). They make much brighter ones now, but this still works for me.
    1. One is attached to the handlebars, and points at the eye-level of oncoming traffic.
    2. The other one is attached to the left-side of my helmet. I can point this one at the road, in the faces of drivers coming up from side-roads and driveways to make sure that they see me, etc.
