I think the double ended brake cables are meant to have one end cut off. They put a MTB end on one side, and a road one on the other. Figure out which one your brakes need, and cut the other one off. This way the shop only has to stock one type of cable.

That is how many bare cables work. This one has a MTB end (that's what I need) and a special end that hooks under the drum brake lever. The MTB end cannot thread through the bar end levers I have installed.
