That is how many bare cables work. This one has a MTB end (that's what I need) and a special end that hooks under the drum brake lever. The MTB end cannot thread through the bar end levers I have installed.
I think I know what you're talking about - I installed a Sturmey-Archer X-FD front drum brake hub on my cruiser, and the supplied brake cable wasn't long enough. I found that there's a part that you can order, a "pinch bolt", that will allow you to use any brake cable (road or mtn end), so long as you install this pinch bolt on the end that interfaces with the brake arm of the hub.
