You overestimate the vocabulary of many British people nowadays. "Down under" would be more usual. Interestingly, there isn't just one "antipodes," but every place has its own. I think America's is China, as in the China Syndrome.
That's why I said

No, there isn't one Antipodes, it's just a term that means two places diametrically opposite on the surface of the earth. It also means opposite or contrary, which quite often I am with many things.
