I start out with 2048x1536. To get nice photos at night I have a cheap (like $15) compact tripod that goes everywhere with me and I usually shoot a 1 to 1.5 second exposure. The above were resized to 640x480 at JPEG quality 0.75 (or 75, depending on whether your image editor counts JPEG quality as 0 to 100 or 0.0 to 1.0).
