Seriously...no lock that will protect a bike? Not even 2 locks and a cable? Are they that easy to break? What about a kryptonite u lock?
The problem is not having the bike stolen. The problem is vandalism. I almost shed a tear everytime I see a nice Specialized or Trek in my College that got it's seat/seatpost taken away or got it's shift/brake cables cut just for the hell of it.

The cheap bike would only fall apart if you do XC with it, not during commuting. You don't need a lock for XC. You only need locks for commuting, but they can only go so far.
