Agree that most stock gearing (53/39) misses for most riders in most places.
I have DA 50/39 set up which for me is perfect for the club rides on rolling terrain (Maryland) with a few steeper climbs (10% or less). The 50 means I cross chain less, but when the strong guys really light it up I can spin out -- usually a very brief issue.
For Western Maryland or PA with longer steeper stuff I swap out to a compact because I still need the 34 of the compact or the longer/steeper climbs, but I take it back off because the 34 is too low much of the time elsewhere.
I think my perfect gearing today would be 50/36... but I don't think that exists... plan B is to get stronger and eventually be able to use the 39 in the hills!!
