This gets discussed in the commuting forum fairly often. At first it seems stunningly obvious that commuting by bike should be cheaper than driving a car, but if you aren't making a real effort to control costs cycling can easily cost as much per mile as driving a car.
That said, I do try to limit expenses and figure I spend about 10 cents per mile.
There is absolutely no way commuting by bike could ever cost as much as driving a car. When you add it all up it should not even be close. Now recreational road cycling could be a different story.
