I have a '72 Sports Tourer with a Gran Turismo derailleur. Shifting was poor with the Schwinn approved 14 to 34 5 speed freewheel. Since the rear spacing was already 126 mm, I put a 13 to 30 7 speed Suntour freewheel on it. The Gran Tursimo shifts very good now. Maybe part of the GT's problem was the huge jumps between gears on some of those old 5 speed touring clusters?
I think that's very plausible. First, big jumps are harder to shift than smaller, and the SunTour tooth could be sharper-edged than the old freewheels.
Should work nicely with a Shimano or Sachs freewheel, which have grabby teeth.
