Do a good singletrack on a road bike with 23mm or even tubular tires. If you can do 30 miles without a flat then you are riding. Until then, quit worrying and just work on it. It will make you a better bike handler and a better racer
Road bikes... or even cross bikes, cannot handle much of the best singletrack. I prefer not to dismount.
