In general the safety monitors or the individuals who believe that by somehow riding in a group that they are no longer responsible for their own safety/decision making can get old.
I hate it when you tell a guy before the ride that you don't want to hammer today and they say, "yeah, me neither. Let's ride together OTB if they hammer it" only to see him later leading an attack. I understand it - you always feel better when you're out there, but it's like half-wheeling before the ride even starts.
I've gotten flak on one ride before about making a left turn when oncoming cars are approaching, even after yelling "CAR UP!" FWIW, I was never in any danger and had plenty of room, but the pack, which had about thirty riders, would not have been able to make it. One rider told me (not unkindly) that it's "not good for the group" or something like that. What, just because you are in a pack means you are going to blindly follow the leader when making a left-hander on a busy road.

I know some will disagree with me here, but, personally, I think on group rides
you are responsible for your safety, no one else.
