IIRC, this happened just prior to BD being an advertiser here. His account had no red star. The specific link was the alum bike with the Campagnolo Record group, which he wanted to offer to BF/RC first. So he couldn't really post it himself without violating forum guidelines.
His motivation may have been a gesture to BF/RC, he may have known that he didn't have the capacity in the supply chain to offer it publicly. Only he knows for sure.
I don't think the PM was as egregious as many make it out to be. Recall that even the recipient of the message didn't think anything of it at first.
