First, I must recommend you DO NOT ride any bicycle 18-120 MPH through campus crowds. Actually, you're not doing that anyway. So, either is good. The SS is probably a little less likely to be stolen. Riding a fixed comfortably takes a little practice - a few weeks. If for whatever reason you do not have the time to ride at a slower pace to learn then absolutely go SS. Either way, make sure to have at least a front brake if you go fixed and front/rear if you so SS.
