Broken hand, cast off...now what
Broke my my 4th metacarpal (ring finger) on my left hand exactly 4 weeks ago in a crash. Cast came off this morning. Dr. recommended, of course, not to ride the bike on the road and to stick to the trainer for another 2-3 weeks She is concerned 1) about the pressure on the hand on the bars and 2) if there is another crash and impact to the hand, the bone will easily break again. I am pretty much committed (in my mind) to complete a century next week up in Vermont. This is a charity event for raising $ for type 1 diabetes research. I have raised a good deal of money and I feel that I would be letting my donors down if I didn't ride. More importantly, I doing this for my daughter, who has T1.
Anyway, I realize the risk of impact and it breaking again if I happen to go down. My question is around anything I can do to provide some protection to the hand while on the bars/hoods. Would it make sense to add some padding to the bars? wrap the hand in something with a bit more padding what's already in the gloves? Any recommendations/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
