I can't say about Ultegra but my DA 50/34 and 11/28 combo works just fine. That's an Ultegra SL crank with DA der. and brifters. As mentioned above I try not to use the big/big or small/small gear combos, which I wouldn't anyway under normal use. My 7970 setup uses the same gearing.
