Funny, i asked this same question a week ago. :-)

Its been awhile but I think the primary reason for the 'click' style right adujster is to allow the use of non-Shimano wheels or wheels with different high gear to drop out spacing in the event wheel replacement is needed.

If a different wheel is used you click the adjuster the appropriate number of clicks to keep the chain from dropping or to macro adjust the indexing to get you home.
