Its called "getting dropped" and then being "out of contention". It sucks, but it happens.

Just never give up. Keep training and practice what you are not good at. So, at your club rides, get used to riding at the front, keeping good position, of course. Get yourself dropped and try to catch on again. These sorts of things will help.

But the most important thing, really, is to learn to ride safely, i.e., learning not to be a strong squirrel. You can get that only with either a coach or a team of experienced riders that will tell you (i.e., yell at you) when you are screwing up. Find these things too.
