I'm a new rider also, but this is my experience. Be careful not to rest your hands anywhere between your pinky and your wrist. I was doing this and after a ride I couldn't make the star trek "live long and prosper" sign. That position put a lot of pressure on my ulnar nerve. Shifted my hand position and no more problems. While on the hoods you should have a handshake hand position.
